Coming to Slovenia
A brief overview of the available visas and the process of coming to Slovenia to live and work
Standard EU procedures applicable for EU citizens who aim to live and work in Slovenia:
To stay in Slovenia for up to 90 days, you simply need your ID card or passport. If you want to stay longer (up to a maximum of 5 years), you will need:
A completed application form
Your Passport or ID card
An employment contract
A letter from an employer confirming that you will be working for a Slovenien employer or other documents confirming that you are the owner of an enterprise
Declare your place of residence

Get a Schengen Visa (C)
A Schengen Visa C allows you (by a third-country national) to stay in Slovenia for a total period of 90 days. These days need to be utilised within a 180-day period. A Schengen visa is relatively easy and quick to get.
Get a Schengen Visa (D)
A Schengen Visa D allows you (by a third-country national) to stay in Slovenia for a total period not shorter than 90 days and longer than one year. Visa D cannot be extended.
Get an EU Blue Card
What is an EU Blue Card?
The EU Blue Card is a 2-in-1 (work and residence) permit, that’s specifically designed for highly-skilled non-EU citizens. It will be valid for up to 2 years and it can be extended for up to 2 years also. You will have right to bring family members. You will get eligibility for permanent residence after 5 years.
How much will it cost?
If the application for the first Blue Card is lodged at the diplomatic mission or consular post of the Republic of Slovenia abroad, the administrative fee is 102 EUR. If the application for the first Blue Card is lodged at the competent administrative unit in the Republic of Slovenia, the administrative fee is 70 EUR. The price of the residence permit card is 12 EUR. Renewal: The administrative fee for the renewal of the Blue Card is 70 EUR. Replacement: The price of the residence permit card is 12 EUR.
Travel information and options
By Air
Three international airports provide easy access by plane to every corner of Slovenia. The Ljubljana Joze Pucnik Airport, 25km from the capital Ljubljana is the main Slovenian airport for passengers and cargo. Regular and charter flights carry passengers to all important European destinations.
By Road
It is easy to reach Slovenia from anywhere in Europe by car or lorry within a day or two. Currently, there are nearly 700 km of well-maintained motorways and over 1,000 km of trunk roads.
By Sea
Ferry lines connect Slovenia with coastal towns of Adriatic and Mediterranean countries, while large cruise ships take holiday-makers on trips in summer months. When arriving in Slovenia by sea, travellers enter the country via port of Koper, the largest port and town on Slovenia’s Adriatic coast. Other ports of entry are Piran and Izola (in the summer season).
In terms of freight traffic Port of Koper is a fast-growing cargo port at the Adriatic Sea. It provides 7 to 10 days shorter route for shipments arriving from Asia than Europe’s northern ports.
